The Rat Race!

The rat race- does anyone really win?

Have you ever contemplated on the phrase “rat race”?  This term is describing our modern society and our daily lives of hard work. Many people are working long hours and they are exhausted as they come home from work tired everyday. Our society has become very competitive and there are people who are worried about the prospect of losing their jobs!

This phrase rat race is also comparing human beings to rats having a race.  It might sound quite funny right? But is it really all laughs? Would you agree that  it is actually quite sad? Why might this be? I would say that even if somebody were to “win” in this race, that person has won a very laughable race indeed!

Our daily lives!

Why is it not worth winning the rat race? you might be thinking. So, what exactly is this race many of us are part of about?

In our daily lives, we work hard to be able to put food on our tables, a roof over our heads and to be able to pay the bills. That is what we need to do to survive right? Someone might ask, if I were to leave the rat race, what option do I have? How can I pay for anything? How will I survive? Those are all important questions to consider of course! It is not possible to just go up to your boss one day and say, “OK I quit”! while not having another income source! I think we would all agree that it is not very wise to do that!

When does the rat race finish?

We are very mindful of the time in our daily lives

Yes many of us are part of it. We wake up, conscious of the time- every second counts! We might be so nice to ourselves that we stuff food down our throats or leave without food! Heck, we might even stuff food down our throats while we are hurrying to work!

We work for hours, maybe a 9-5 job. Essentially we are trading our time for money. We come home, exhausted. We might need to plan for the next day if we are working in jobs such as teaching. We go to sleep all to reset and start work the next day. After all, we are saving money for our retirements! Although I agree that we need money saved for when we retire, I think to myself, why can’t we also enjoy life in our 20’s, 30’s. and so on?

How can anyone leave?

How can we get more time to enjoy life?

So what can I do? How can anyone possibly leave the rat race? That is not possible right?

OK, so I completely understand how when we come home from a long day of work, we need to distress and rewind. I would say that if anyone is ready to make a change in their lives, they would try their best to make time for what they want. To give you an example, there might be a person who works a 9-5 job. This person is determined to lose weight so although going to the gym might not be an option, this person makes time to do cardio and strength training at home for 20 mins, 3 times a week. For example, another area is skincare. Although someone  might not have enough time for a full skin care routine, that person might incorporate a few minutes a day to tone and fully cleanse their skin.

The same would apply to finding financial freedom. Although it is not possible to leave the rat race one day and say to your boss, “I’m done!”, you can always work slowly by researching how you can find financial freedom. There are many reasons why it is a good idea to leave the rat race. I think the most important reasons is to have financial freedom which will allow more free time. Let’s be honest, money is the vehicle that drives us to having free-time. it is not as simple as leaving your 9-5. It is true that if you leave, you will then have more time but having a secure income has to be your first priority!
